The Lovebirds Netflix Movie Review

On the brink of breaking up, a couple gets unintentionally embroiled in a bizarre murder mystery. As they get closer to clearing their names and solving the case, they need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

A MORE PHYSICAL SKETCHY COMEDY THAN THE BIG SICK

The Lovebirds film stands out as more of a sketchy comedy with a lot of physical humor. The awkwardness between the couple on screen gives sheds light on what happens to many relationships when the magic from the beginning starts to fade away over time. As the couple are witness to murder just after their break up instead of waiting for police to arrive and sort things out this interracial young couple is more afraid of what the police may think and do to them since they are both minorities so they flee the scene and are on the run. As the mystery starts to unfold, I began to work in my own imagination a little too much, based on the style and direction in the previous film, and was able to figure out the likely outcomes. Even though this was predictable to me doesn't mean this was an easily predictable movie. I just have a weird way of seeing things and if you are familiar with the way things tend to happen in the strange thing called reality. This movie reminded me of that old saying "the simpleness explanation tends to be the correct one".

I would not mind seeing another movie by this same team, maybe in the same universe the way Kevin Smith did with his movies. I appreciate the film's diversity and the fact that it shed light and made lite of delicate situations on race and wasn't afraid to take a few risks. This was more than just a bizarre comedy, it was a reflection on how couples can become stale and take things for granted making people their own worse enemy to their own relationships. Which is something that isn't obvious to people till something bad happens like a guy using your car to commit murder and leaving you to explain it all to the cops.
